Review: (Chapter 20 – The Downside of Creating Good Habits)

Today marks day 20 of reading Atomic Habits, in this chapter review, we will learn about keeping our habits in check. This is also marks final chapter!

The book itself is very highly rated on amazon https://amzn.to/3x4K7Sa (affiliate link to book), boasting a 4.7 star rating over 157,532 reviews. The book also claims to have sold over 15 million copies as of Oct. 16, 2018 and has sold over 20 million copies as of Mar. 4, 2024.

This chapter follows up Chapter 19, where we learned about doing tasks just on the edge of our current abilities.

Chapter Summary:

  • “The upside of habits is that we can do things without thinking. The downside is that we stop paying attention to little errors.” This line was a real eye opener for me, because I realized that although I have a couple good habits, I have a lot of bad habits. This realization helped me drastically reduce my consumption of “brain rot” through shorts, tiktok, etc.
  • “Habits + Deliberate Practice = Mastery” I believe this means that to master a habit is to be aware that you habitually do it, because like we said before, an important aspect of habit development is being aware.
  • “Reflection and review is a process that allows you to remain conscious of your performance over time.” Again, the goal is to become conscious of your habits, so that you can properly adjust if need be.
  • “The tighter we cling to an identity, the harder it becomes to grow beyond it.” For the longest time I clang to the identity of being a gamer, I thought games were the only place I was capable of finding consistent joy. As I got older, I started to drift away from gaming, actually this has been more recently as I honed in on my channel and self-help content. It isn’t like I forced myself to stop gaming, I just naturally grew more interested in being productive, I still play games quite a bit, but definitely a lot less, and when I do, I tend to enjoy them a lot more.

Final Quick Message To Readers:

I want to quickly thank all of those who read these articles and gave them likes, it helps me know that this isn’t all for nothing. Although my grammar may not be perfect, I try my best as my main focus was to focus on the message I was sending and not worry too much about the grammar, but I will work to improve upon it, hopefully at least 1% a day 😉
