Review: [Chapter 18 – The Truth About Talent (When Genes Matter and When They Don’t)]

Today marks day 18 of reading Atomic Habits, in this chapter review, we will learn about competing in the right field for us.

The book itself is very highly rated on amazon https://amzn.to/3x4K7Sa (affiliate link to book), boasting a 4.7 star rating over 157,532 reviews. The book also claims to have sold over 15 million copies as of Oct. 16, 2018 and has sold over 20 million copies as of Mar. 4, 2024.

This chapter follows up Chapter 17, where we learned about making behavior unsatisfying.

Chapter Summary:

  • “The secret to maximizing your odds of success is to choose the right field of competition.” This reminds me of a similar concept called using your “unfair advantages”. We all have places where we excel, sometimes it takes a while to find these places, but believe me, somewhere in you is a special skill that you have to learn to use to be successful.
  • “Pick the right habit and progress is easy. Pick the wrong habit and life is a struggle.” Life doesn’t have to always be an uphill battle, so when possible (if it benefits you) choose to coast downhill.
  • “Genes cannot be easily changed, which means they provide a powerful advantage in favorable circumstances and a serious disadvantage in unfavorable circumstances.”
  • “Habits are easier when they align with your natural abilities. Choose the habits that best suit you.”
  • “Play a game that favors your strengths. If you can’t find a game that favors you, create one.”
  • “Genes do not eliminate the need for hard work. They clarify it. They tell us what to work hard on.”

Since a lot of these summaries are overlapping, I thought it would make more sense to just give my final thoughts on the concepts. Choosing a path that is playing to your strength is going to lead to a higher chance of success, but what I will say is that if you want to pursue something that doesn’t play into your strength then acknowledge that you will have to work much harder and don’t have use the fact that it’s not an area of strength for you as an excuse.
