Review: (Chapter 13 – How to Stop Procrastinating by Using the Two-Minute Rule)

Today marks day 13 of reading Atomic Habits, in this chapter review, we will learn about keeping habits going even if it means doing it for only two minutes a day.

The book itself is very highly rated on amazon https://amzn.to/3x4K7Sa (affiliate link to book), boasting a 4.7 star rating over 157,532 reviews. The book also claims to have sold over 15 million copies as of Oct. 16, 2018 and has sold over 20 million copies as of Mar. 4, 2024.

This chapter follows up Chapter 12, how we naturally gravitate towards doing less work.

Chapter Summary:

  • “Habits can be completed in a few seconds but continue to impact your behavior for minutes or hours afterward.” If you meditate in the morning because its one of your goals, you will feel good about yourself, changing how you act in the future.
  • “Many habits occur at decisive moments-choices that are like a fork in the road-and either send you in the direction of a productive day or an unproductive one.” For me I know a real fork in the road decision is how early I wake up, if I sleep in, I tend to be far less productive, resulting in a bad day, but if I wake up early, then I feel good and will be more productive, resulting in a good day.
  • “The Two-Minute Rule states, ‘When you start a new habit, it should take less than two minutes to do.” The reason you want to do this is because you are far more likely to follow through with doing it consistently, and consistency is key. After you build consistency, you can look to doing the task for longer.
  • “The more you ritualize the beginning of a process, the more likely it becomes that you can slip into the state of deep focus that is required to do great things.” I actually sort of realized this on my own. I realized that as long as I eventually opened the door to the outside, I was guaranteed to go through with going to the gym. If I focus on all the aspects of going to the gym, waking up early, making breakfast, walking, stretching, working out, walking home, showering, and everything else in-between, it quickly becomes an overwhelming task, which is why visualizing it as just opening the door makes it a lot easier.
  • “Standardize before you optimize. You can’t improve a habit that doesn’t exist.” It’s better to do a little than to do nothing at all.
