Review: (Chapter 11 – Walk Slowly, but Never Backward)

Today marks day 11 of reading Atomic Habits, in this chapter review, we will learn about making habits easy.

The book itself is very highly rated on amazon https://amzn.to/3x4K7Sa (affiliate link to book), boasting a 4.7 star rating over 157,532 reviews. The book also claims to have sold over 15 million copies as of Oct. 16, 2018 and has sold over 20 million copies as of Mar. 4, 2024.

This chapter follows up Chapter 10, where we learned about making bad habits unattractive.

Chapter Summary:

  • “The 3rd Law of Behavior Change is make it easy.” It will be much easier to make something habitual if it is easier. If you wanted to learn to draw, then commit to drawing each day, not worrying about the time you draw, because drawing for even just 15 minutes can seem like a chore, meaning you want do it, therefore never developing the habit.
  • “The most effective form of learning is practice, not planning.” You learn best by letting yourself fail, it’s just facts. If I wanted to learn video-editing, I would learn much faster if I started making videos than if I just watched a ton of videos on how to edit. You learn by finding obstacles, also known as not knowing how to do something, then you can try to figure out how to do it yourself or watch a video on how to do it. It’s unrealistic to think that if you watch a 6 hour video on how to do every little thing in Premiere Pro that you will be able to retain this knowledge.
  • “Focus on taking action, not being in motion.” This is something you see in a lot of people who want to become YouTubers, they are always in the planning phase (motion) and they take way too long to start actually doing things (action), some don’t ever even leave the motion phase.
  • “Habit formation is the process by which a behavior becomes progressively more automatic through repetition.” I think a lot of people make this mistake, including myself, we expect that after we do something a couple times, maybe for a week, that it’s magically going to become easier. This isn’t how developing habits work, it takes months of staying consistent to develop habits.
  • “The amount of time you have been performing a habit is not as important as the number of times you have performed it.” Through performing the activity is how we develop the habit, meditating every day for whatever time you are willing to give is going to be a lot more impactful than failing to try to meditate every day for 15 minutes.
